Girl in Pieces, by Kathleen Glasgow
December 15, 2025
I just finished reading Girl In Pieces, a Novel by Kathleen Glasgow and it’s giving me feelings…
Possibly vulnerability, reading so many raw words, did it speak to my heart? My heart definitely feels full.
Maybe it’s gratitude for an exquisite story full of emotions so vibrant, they seem to vibrate in my mind…profoundly sad, profoundly hopeful, profoundly beautiful.
Wistful? Imagining a life not mine, Hopeful? for beauty from tragedy?
It is really hard to pin down the overwhelming emotions, but I am not sad. I am not disappointed. I am not emptied by reading the pain and hurt and confusion and I feel somehow more alive.
So now, after revealing that confusing visceral reaction, the question is: Would I recommend this book for you to read?
As with most things, the answer must be: Conditionally.
Since it is full of intense emotions and describes devastating events, it can spark an intense response. “TRIGGER WARNING” and such.
Self-harm is such a difficult subject, don’t you think? It comes from a place of demotion and mental illness, ignited by abuse, neglect, affliction (more triggers)…this book deals with the aftermath as well: Where does a person go from here? This book emphasized to me that we are masters of our own fate, captains of our own life, and we can overcome anything. There is beauty out there if we just can see it. It also helped me to see that every act of kindness, words of support and encouragement, are so valuable.
The story honestly portrays Charlie's struggles with depression and anxiety, emphasizing the deep impact of trauma on her identity. Relationships with characters like Mikey and Riley, Linus and Blue, illustrate the significance of support networks in healing, highlighting that recovery is strengthened through connection, whether positive or negative. It portrays recovery as a complex journey filled with setbacks, reminding readers that hope can exist even in darkness. Charlie’s relatable voice and the people she encounters deepen the emotional weight of the story, showcasing the strength found in companionship. The author’s lyrical writing style and vivid imagery, particularly the idea of glass representing fragility and strength, enrich the narrative. The book prompts reflection on personal experiences with grief and trauma, making it a catalyst for vital conversations about mental health.
It might not be for everyone, but for some of us, if we read with our heart, it will paint on our mind and widen our soul.
