Dear Student, Parent, or Guardian,
I would like to take a few moments of your time to introduce myself and let you know that I am excited to be working with your child this semester. I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a minor in Multimedia and Communications, and a Ph.D. in General Psychology with an Emphasis on Integrating Technology, Learning, and Psychology in the classroom. My dissertation research focused on social-emotional learning. This education has prepared me to assist your child with studies related to the wonders of math and computer science, in a healthy and holistic manner. This year, I have been actively teaching in both classroom and online settings. I discovered a love for teaching while working in the computer field for almost thirty years, finding deep satisfaction in helping others understand concepts that they might generally find difficult or intimidating. Every child deserves the respect of every teacher and also deserves to learn from someone who cares deeply about their education and ability to function effectively in the modern workforce. Over the course of this year, I aim to help your child discover a passion for math and coding while building confidence in their developing skills as a mathematician or programmer.
I am equally excited to be working in a part of the world that I once occupied as a student. I grew up in La Grande and chose to raise my own children here. I graduated from La Grande High and am a proud Tiger. I am deeply rooted in Eastern Oregon and recognize that your child represents the future of our region, as well as the ever-demanding world at large. Your son or daughter deserves an education that will prepare your child for what the future holds, and with your help, I will do everything in my power to assist in that preparation.
Over the course of this year, I will be focusing on advanced math, Python, and Java programming. Challenges are an integral part of the learning process. I will also spend time establishing connections between these learning spaces and more advanced mathematics and technical skills that exist in the real world. As a STEAM teacher, I want my students to understand the nature of the math and technical world they encounter in their everyday lives, as that understanding adds personal connections to what they see in class.
