LaFargeville Central School Building Project Proposal
Proposal Vote: December 13, 2022
1:00 - 9:00 pm in the school cafeteria
Estimated Project Start: Spring 2024
Estimated Project Completion: Summer 2025
Total Cost: $10.3 million
School Tax Impact: $0
Mission of the project
The project's mission is to repair and/or replace dilapidated infrastructure and increase safety and security for our students and staff.
This is a project about needs, not wants.
Boiler System
The most significant cost in this proposal is to replace the failing boiler and much of the heating system throughout the building.
Plumbing Replacement
All failing cast iron piping and at end of life, including sewer and roof drains, will be replaced in this project. These systems have repeatedly failed over the past five years.
Cafeteria
The outer cafeteria wall, which has profound safety implications and failing windows, will be replaced. The ceiling will also be replaced. While doing this work, it only makes sense that the entire cafeteria gets a refresh.
Roof Systems
Out of warranty roof systems will be removed and replaced. These areas are over 20 years old and parts of the system have failed.
Kitchen
The kitchen, over 50 years old in some areas, needs the infrastructure (water lines, drains, electricity, etc.) replaced and the most cost-effective and safest way to do this is to gut the area and rebuild it to the current building code.
Code Updates
With new building codes, many areas of the building, including the fire system, need to be updated to meet the current code. Many fixtures and doors also need to be replaced to be in compliance.
Asphalt
The asphalt around the main building and at the bus garage has failed in some areas and needs to be repaired, while all areas need to be resurfaced.
Masonry
Significant areas of the building and bus garage are in need of masonry repairs and repointing. Some repairs are structural.
Lighting Upgrades
Many of our areas need to be updated to LED lighting as older systems are failing.
Electrical Upgrades
Technology needs over the years have led to a need to increase outlet availability in classrooms and to install appropriate cabling for modern devices.
Hallway Updates/Repairs
The hallway walls need to be repainted multiple times a year, while tiled walls in the building have held up without the need for repair for decades. This leads us to propose tiling the lower portion of all hallways. Hallway lockers that are beyond their useful life and cannot be repaired, will be replaced.
Courtyard Updates
If funds allow, we are proposing to update the courtyard and create a more usable space for our students (possibly including an outdoor teaching space).
