Coulee Region Authentic Learning Council (CRALC) was established as an independent charter school governance board for La Crosse Polytechnic School and Coulee Region Virtual Academy ("schools") within the School District of La Crosse. Our purpose is to plan, support, and align the schools to our charter contracts.
La Crosse Polytechnic is a teacher-powered instrumentality charter that focuses on innovation and pushing boundaries in education, with a mission and vision to increase access to educationally disadvantaged students, and increase career and college readiness for all students. La Crosse Polytechnic is committed to enabling students to achieve academic, social, and career success by providing project-based educational opportunities and a supportive learning community that identifies, encourages, and develops each student's unique interests and abilities by using design as a central learning theme.
Coulee Region Virtual Academy (CRVA) is an online instrumentality charter school focused on community, business, entrepreneurship, and innovation for students in grades 4-year-old kindergarten through grade 12. CRVA recognizes that a “one size fits all” model does not meet the needs of all students. Each student will be guided by an individualized learning plan designed to address skill gaps, accelerate learning in areas of success, promote exploration in areas of interest, and provide clear steps to college and career readiness.
CRALC holds the teachers and administration to this commitment and pursuit in the ever changing educational landscape. The charter schools are established under Wisconsin Statute 118.40 as instrumentality charter schools (tuition free and open to all district students) within the School District of La Crosse (SDLAX) with the intent of providing educational opportunities to all students by supporting personalized and innovative schools. As the charter schools must meet all SDLAX requirements, the charter schools offer these alternatives to meet diverse student needs, thereby offering more inclusion and decreased opportunity gaps in education within SDLAX.
From the outset, CRALC's goal has always been to have a stand alone school separate from any other district building. That dream came true in 2019 as the School District of La Crosse purchased a former bar and Fraternity of the Eagles Club in downtown La Crosse.
This move aligned perfectly with CRALC's long term plans. The new location provided an opportunity for students to "design their own education" and apply their learning in real-world settings. The Middle and High School moved into the new building to start the 2020-2021 school year.
Shortly after that move, CRALC took on the governance of CRVA in its new efforts and responsibilities in serving pandemic needs. The decision to take on CRVA was a thoughtful one, based on alignment of mission and vision.
