Reading Homework

This year students will not be required to keep track of reading minutes on a reading log. I ALWAYS recommend that students read at least 20 minutes per night but it will not be required.

To build on you child's reading progress, I would recommend asking your child questions before, during, and after reading. This helps build reading comprehension and ensures that your child knows and understands what he or she is reading.

Some question stems to build reading comprehension...

  1. Why did the author write this book? What evidence do you have to support your answer?

  2. Who are the characters in the book? What do you know about them?

  3. What was the problem or event in the story? How was it resolved?

  4. What do you think the character could do differently next time?

Spelling/ Phonics Homework

Students will be given a 'Red Word' spelling test at the beginning of each quarter as a pretest and assessed again at the end of the quarter as a post-test. Red Words are words that students must know by the end of their 3rd grade year.

Green can be found on the phonics focus for each quarter. These words can be sounded out by using the spelling pattern or rule. The 'green words' do not have to be memorized but are examples of how the patterns are used and may or may not be on the test/sprinkle.

There are 3 parts to the sprinkle test. The first is the 'green word' test which assess your child's ability to sound out words and/or use the spelling pattern taught.

The second part of the sprinkle assess your child's ability on red words, which are the 'red words' that are assessed at the end of each quarter. These words are assessed in no particular order, so your child should be consistently working on the red words throughout the quarter. The red words do not follow any of the given rules and cannot be sounded out.

The last part of the sprinkle is called sentence dictation. This assesses your child's ability to spell and to use correct sentence structure.

Assessments or 'sprinkles' will be given every couple of weeks.

Math Homework

Students will not be sent home with math assignments that need to be completed. However, we will be focusing on math facts throughout the year.

First Quarter: Addition & Subtraction

Second Quarter: Multiplication 1-4

Third Quarter: Multiplication 5-8

Fourth Quarter: Multiplication 9-12

Students can practice their math facts using the Google Classroom if they have access to it at home.

Students can also work on ALEKS if they are able to take their Chromebooks home.
