Week of 4/12/21

This week we are going to start reading the notes on the staff.

Week of 3/29/21

This week we are learning about Alan Menken who composes music for Disney.

We will also be reviewing that dotted quarter note.

Alan Menken wrote the music for The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Aladdin just to name a few.

Week of 3/22/21

This week we are learning about Danny Elfman who composed the music for over 100 films including The Nightmare Before Christmas.

We are also studying the dotted quarter note.

Danny Elfman was the singer/songwriter for the group Oingo Boingo.

He composed the scores for Batman, Men In Black, and Spiderman just to name a few.

Week of 3/15/21

This week we will be reviewing sixteenth notes!

Week of 3/8/21

This week we are studying John Williams.

He wrote the music for the Star Wars movies and the Harry Potter films. He also wrote the scores for Jurassic Park and Jaws.

We are also going to learn about the 'tie' in music.

Week of 3/1/21

This week we are learning about the composer Lin-Manuel Miranda.

We will also be studying the jazz genre of swing music.

Week of 2/15/21

This week we are looking at the oboe in the Woodwind Family and learning about bebop jazz.

Week of 2/2/21

This week we are going to discuss Woodwind Quintets and dotted half notes.

Week of 1/25/21

This week we are talking about the clarinet in the Woodwind Family of instruments.

We are also going to keep discussing Jazz music with Dixieland.

Watch some or all of this if you want. I like the different sizes of saxophones in this video.

Below is an example of Ragtime music by Scott Joplin. The bouncy rhythm was called “Ragged time” at first because it sounded as ragged as a torn piece of cloth. Then it got shortened to ragtime.

This song is called "The Entertainer."

If you want to do some drumming, the following are a couple of exercises.

This is another example of Ragtime played on saxophones.

Find three different things from around your house to use as a drum, a triangle, and a woodblock and play along.

Week of 1/4/21

This week we are looking at the tuba in the brass family and talking about dotted notes.

We are going to look at the French Horn and more of the ballet, The Nutcracker.

Week of 12/7/20

This week we are focusing on the trumpet in the brass family.

Week of 11/30/20

This week we are talking about the brass family of instruments. We are also going to learn how to read the notes in the treble clef.

The piano is both a string and a percussion instrument. You can see the strings that the Piano Guys are plucking making it a stringed instrument. And there are little hammers that strike the strings when you hit a piano key making it a percussion instrument.

This week we're going to talk about the percussion family.
