2022 Award Nominee Books
Here are the award nominee books for NEXT school year!
Tall Tales
Tall tales are a type of traditional literature that originated in the United States. They are stories that possess extreme exaggeration. Typically the hero is big, and actions in the story are big. Sometimes the characters are based upon actually people, but typically they are just a conglomerate of people put together to create a fictional character.
New Books Donated to Sunset View Kids—Author Patrick Carman, who lives in Walla Walla, has donated a book to each family (1st – 5th grade) at Sunset View Elementary. Books written by Patrick range from early chapter books to young adults. He has more than 45 books in print. Primary students at Sunset View will receive the book Balls and intermediate students will receive the book Inventors.
He has a fun audio-book podcast for your family to enjoy: www.gokidgo.com
We hope that your family enjoys the book that Patrick Carman has so graciously donated! If you would like to send him a thank you his email is:

What an absolutely wonderful gift for our students and family Patrick Carman has given us! Happy reading!!
Legends
This week the nonfiction genre focus is upon legends.
Legends are stories with a hero that were told prior to written history. It is believed that at least part of the information is factual, however the hero's identity is not historically verified (it may actually be several people combined into a single person). These stories are typically thousands of years old (approximate dates of some of well-known legends include: Robin Hood 1377, King Arthur 1200s, Mulan 420).
Week of April 12-16th--Mythology
This week in our unit on nonfiction genres the topic is mythology. Myths were developed to explain something that occurred in nature. Myths that were once a religion are found in the religion section of the Dewey Decimal system (300s). . Common/popular types of this kind of mythology include: Egyptian (3100-2686 BC), Greek (3000-1100 BC), Roman (800-700 BC), Norse (790-1100 CE), and Hawaiian (000 BC). Cryptids (unexplained and unproven creatures, such as the Lochness Monster, and Sasquatch) also fall under the category of mythology because they are things that occur in nature. Cryptids are in the 000 section (General Information) in a library.

These are the books that are used for Battle of the Books (preparation for this competition takes place December until the end of February during library time). At this time the plan is to continue with this competition, knowing that it may need to take place virtually.
