Cognitive Science stands at the frontier of understanding the human mind and brain, drawing from Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, and Computational Theory to uncover the principles that govern cognition. This weeklong Summer School at Krea University is designed to engage participants with foundational issues in the field—ranging from the computational architecture of language to the biological mechanisms underlying thought and perception. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on training in EEG and Eye-Tracking, we will explore how minds and brains process information, neural computation, how we can scientifically study the same, and the implications for both theories of human nature and Artificial General Intelligence.
This year we focus primarily on Natural Language as natural phenomena unique to Homo Sapiens, its computational complexity and issues concerning implementing Natural Language capacities on artifical machines, and what Natural Language tells us about the functional and evolutionary properties of the sapien brain. Our distinguished faculty includes Prof. Arild Hestvik (Department of Linguistics and Neuroscience, University of Delaware), Prof. Tobias Scheer (Bases, Corpus et Langage Laboratory, CNRS, Université Côte d'Azur), and Prof. S. Bapiraju (IIIT-Hyderabad), each bringing expertise that bridges theoretical and experimental perspectives. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of why cognitive science lies at the core of artificial intelligence and neuroscience, how causal and explanatory models shape our understanding of cognition, and what interdisciplinary research reveals about the evolution of human intelligence. This Summer School is an opportunity to engage with foundational debates that define the study of the human mind-brain, while equipping participants with conceptual and methodological tools to advance their own research.
