Many people watch TV at leisure. But for some of them it is the main source of information. One can choose the programme one likes best. Those who like music can listen to various concerts. Sports fans1 can watch football or hockey matches. Television extends2 our knowledge about the world we live in. Millions of people can see different lands, interesting historical places, unusual animals and birds, mountains and valleys.
There are many TV channels in Ukraine: both government-run and non government- run3. They include editorial services specialising in public-political programmes, current information; youth, and sports and entertaining programmes.
The influence of TV on children is great. According to sociologists, almost 90 per cent of schoolchildren spend their free time watching TV. A teenager4 spends between 1.5 and 4 hours watching TV. That’s why TV should produce clever and positive programmes for children not to make them turn into passive recipients5 but enforce6 them to do something useful and good, to challenge7 intellect but not to see violence8 and crimes9.
As for me I always try to watch CNN news in English, some youth programmes, different talk-shows and musical programmes. In addition I like to see interesting films. I enjoy watching Walt Disney’s cartoons, too. But Lucky Chance (Trivial Pursuit) is my favourite programme. It is a rather enjoyable and entertaining one. It is very popular not only in our country but also in many countries in the world. This weekly programme attracts large audience. Lucky Chance is an interesting educational quiz-programme10, which concerns different human activities: history, literature, music, theatre, painting, geography, biology, sport and others. It educates while entertaining. It enriches our outlook11 and gives additional information to our school programme, encourages12 us to become more educated and intelligent.
I like this TV programme very much and try not to miss it.
