This course is designed to enhance the collaboration between disciplines working with individuals with mental health problems. Students on this course will come from a variety of professions: nursing; medicine; occupational therapy; social work; legal; psychology; and prison services.
Introduction to the programme
The aim of this inter-disciplinary programme is to provide an opportunity for students to develop a sound academic base to their practice and to critically explore and critique mental health service provision. This programme endeavours to provide those who wish to apply for senior positions with the skills necessary for advancing knowledge, initiating and encouraging innovation, and leading and developing their practice, thus enabling them to achieve their highest potential in both their academic and professional lives.
Programme Structure and Delivery
Small classes facilitate the opportunity for students to engage in interactive lectures, discussions and debate. Focusing on the development of critical analysis, reflection, research and presentation skills helps students advance their knowledge of practice and research applied to their area of healthcare. We are also increasingly using blended learning methods, with the introduction of more online teaching. This allows for greater flexibility. Students form small study groups to provide mutual peer support and arenas for discussion and debate. Students can attend our annual interdisciplinary research conference, regular research days, seminars, data analysis clinics and learn about the latest research and practice developments from international and national experts.
Year one commences with a full week in August and thereafter one or two days per week for the remainder of the 9 month academic year (depending on whether the course is being undertaken full-time or part-time).
Year two: attendance at workshops throughout the academic year. A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning.
