Mr. King has the unique role of being principal over the district's alternative learning programs. He oversees students and staff at the Learning Academy, Day Treatment program, and those students at the Appalachian Children's Home where KCPS has a school on-site.
For the past seven years, Mr. King has been in this position. During this time, he reflects that the most special moments are those which "having several students struggle through life and the misfortune placed on them say to you 'Thank you, you saved my life' makes it all worth it. To see them become productive members of society lets me know I made a difference."
Prior to being a principal, Mr. King taught special education and social studies at Flat Lick Elementary then 7th grade social studies at Knox County Middle School.
Having worked with students and families with special needs since his time at Flat Lick is part of what makes being a principal special to him.
"Being directly involved with all parts of the school day allows you to feel accomplished. Within a single day you're able to help students, teachers, and parents overcome challenges in all parts of their life. It's never the same thing each day. Also, I get to work with the best faculty and staff around. I don’t thank them enough for everything they do for our students."
He does have motivating words to share with his staff, or any KCPS staff member, that is looking to advance themselves in education.
"Be a leader from the start of your career. Take on opportunities to be involved within the district such as driving a bus, coaching, fundraising, PLC leaders, volunteer to be on PBIS and school safety teams. This will help you have a better understanding of how the district and school operate outside the classroom."
For Mr. King, there is one teacher that comes to mind that made an impact on his decision to enter education.
"Gerald Stacy. G.R Hampton. Grade school. He was a great storyteller and loved history. He was stern and fair with everyone. You always knew where he stood. I went into education because I enjoyed his classes and the way he cared about each student."
