It has been just a little over a month since Mr. Cornett stepped into the principal's office at Flat Lick Elementary. That itself is a memory, recalling finding out that he had been selected for the position.
He has been a familiar face to the Wildcats, having taught grades 4-6 math at the school.
Being a new principal after school started, and in the middle of a national pandemic, Mr. Cornett says that "the professional goal that I have set for myself and Flat Lick Elementary is to create and provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all students."
While it will be different being the principal instead of the teacher, he truly values being able to establish relationships with his students.
"The most enjoyable part of being a principal is the chance to build relationships and impact more students than just the ones that I would have had in my classroom."
He gives credit to many former teachers who inspired him early on into this career. "Several who genuinely cared about me as a person inspired me to do the same and treat students in the same manner."
He shares advice with his colleagues about making the decision to move out of the classroom and into another position within the school or school system.
"I would advise them to not force it. Wait for the right opportunity and situation. I would also tell them to be involved in the school as much as possible, run for SBDM, serve on committees, help with schedules and planning so that you have an idea of what to expect when you are hired."
For his students, he hopes that he can be that former teacher or principal that inspires them to go on and achieve great things. If that is becoming a teacher, he shares "it takes a special person to be an effective educator. If you are considering it as a future career it will take hard work and dedication, but will be well worth it in the long run because of the lasting effect you have on the lives of so many students."
What else is there to know about the new principal? His students can tell you that he's a huge sports fan, especially the University of Kentucky football and basketball teams, and he loves attending games in Lexington.
