Ekstase und Elend

Deutsche Kulturgeschichte 1900 bis heute

Herzlich Willkommen!

Ekstase und Elend is an intermediate/advanced textbook for German Studies courses. The book presents the cultural history of German-speaking Europe from roughly 1900 to the present. It is a collaborative effort of scholars from German Studies, Applied Linguistics and History (Todd Heidt, Knox College; Claudia Kost, University of Alberta; Emre Sencer, Knox College). This companion website offers supporting media from a variety of resources. The authors have selected media which are either in the public domain, licensed with creative commons, or were shared freely by the creators/copyright holders. All media come from well-curated sites such as academic research projects in digital humanities, museums, archives, government repositories and more. We encourage students to use these reliable and legal sites for their own research.

In the menu above, you will see links to resources for each chapter (Kapitel). Additionally, we have a page featuring research projects (Forschungsprojekte) which practice discrete research skills, culminating in a final research project.

Each chapter features a multimedia introduction to the content of the book chapter and links relevant to the chapter content.
