We have seven units that we cover in 8th grade English Language Arts: Fiction, Expository, Poetry, Historical Fiction, Persuasive, Drama, and Mythology. Research will be integrated through every unit. Students will receive a pre-assessment before every new unit. This will serve as a baseline for student instruction. From there, students can personalize their learning within the classroom. A typical week in an ELA classroom would involve a few days of mini-lessons and practice, followed by a few days of independent practice, work, and showing their knowledge. Students will be reading, on average, 3-5 books per quarter, both in and out of the classroom. Students will also have various writing pieces - essays, scripts, poetry, and imaginative stories - to work on throughout the year.Â
PreAP ELA will cover more advanced and mature topics and will also move at a much faster pace. As a class, the work will be more student-led and teacher facilitated. Students will be expected to manage their time, both in and out of the classroom, wisely. Students can have more freedom to choose the way in which they want to demonstrate the material they are learning.
