Advanced Mathematics (formerly known as Pre-AP) is a fast-paced class. The course will cover all of 6th grade and about half of the 7th grade math curriculum on one year. Some mathematics concepts such as solving equations and inequalities will be taught at the 7th grade level.
Chromebooks are used to work on interactive activities regularly. Students will be expected to use a notebook to take notes and to work out math problems on paper. Students will be expected to justify work by writing about mathematics.
To be successful in Advanced Math, students need to come to class prepared, ready to take notes during lessons, consistently complete in-class practices, and to ask deep insightful questions.
Prerequisite: Grade 5 Math, Advanced Math Guidelines: 5th grade math STAAR score of a 80% or higher (mastered grade level), MAP test score of 215 or higher, meets grade level for 5th grade Reading STAAR.
“This class challenges me to with harder problems to help me learn quicker. I always strive for better grades because I plan on being an engineer when grow up. Don't know which one, but I want to be an engineer. To be successful I always finish homework and get better scores on my tests. The Chromebook helps me because of how not only are we learning from the teacher he can learn from us. The notes are helpful because we can study at home and get better grades. Some of these activities are very creative some I wouldn't even think of.” – Bryce W.
“I feel that my class challenges help me do my very best. I feel like I am being successful in class. To be successful do my work and pay attention to my teacher. I think that the Chromebooks help the student learn new math concepts. The notes are very helpful. Most of the activities created are fun. I think having a quiz every week helps you keep track of your progress and how well you have been doing. Mr. Torres always helps a child when in need, which is the kind of teacher you would want. Mr. Torres is available to help you before and after school if needed.” - Andrea R.
“PreAP challenges you to go beyond your limits. In order for you to be successful, you have to try your hardest, study and practice, even when not assigned to do so. It doesn't even matter if you don't do too well on a test because you will probably have quizzes every week, which helps to bump your grade up. If you don't understand something, you can always go to tutoring before school, and after for some extra help.” -Siarra G.

He gives us notes to help us while we do our assignments during the class period. He is also available for tutoring after school or before school.” – Janelle D.
“The notes that my teacher provides for me are very helpful because they help me understand the process of the concept we are learning. Most of the activities that we do in class are very fun because my teacher adds some fun while we are learning new stuff every other day. Having a quiz every week is very helpful to me because the quizzes show me if I need to work on something or not. My teacher is available on certain days and helps us with whatever we need on those days. Using Chromebooks are very helpful to me because I don't have to write everything down on paper and it is easier to contact my teacher if I need any help.” -Zoe H.
