Accelerated mathematics is a fast-paced class. The course will cover 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mathematics concepts in one school year. Successful completion of the class will prepare students to take Algebra 1 during the 7th grade. Because the class is extremely fast-paced, only one to two days are spent on a given concept. Students will work with graphing calculators when working on 8th grade level concepts. Unit tests are given at the end of each unit. Quizzes are given more frequently than any other 6th grade mathematics course.
Chromebooks are used to work on interactive activities regularly and to differentiate math instruction. Students will be expected to use a notebook to take notes and to work out math problems on paper. Students will be expected to justify work by writing about mathematics.
To be successful in Accelerated math, students need to consistently work out class practices, come to class prepared, and to ask questions. Also, due to the fast pacing of the class, daily class attendance is very important to keep up with the course.
Prerequisite: Grade 5 Math. Accelerated Math Guidelines: Mastered ALL three STAAR Math tests from elementary grades with scores of 90% or higher. 5th grade Math MAP test score of 230 or higher. Mastered 5th grade STAAR Reading test.
“This class is challenging but is perfect if you if you are really good at math. Don't take this class if your average in 5th grade was in the 80's or lower. This class is very challenging.” - Cenna S.
“This class is very complicated but it will push you to have amazing skills in math. The lessons in this class really help you to become more successful even though we have only one day for each concept at the most. To do better in this class I would recommend studying even if there is not a test coming up so you can remember the concepts and TAKE NOTES they are extremely important to help you to remember what we learn. If you need some help we do not have time in class so you would have to do before or after school tutoring which is very helpful when you do not get something.” – Hope R.
“Accelerated math is very challenging, but I like it that way so I can push myself to be the best I can. Math is one of my favorite subjects, so most of the assignments that are given to me are fun to do, especially with the help of an amazing machine like a Chromebook. I definitely feel like having a quiz every or every other week is definitely helpful because without it, I would be left on a blank until I got my report card. Even if I get a bad grade, my teacher is always there to help, before school for math club, after school for tutoring and he sometimes even has time to help students in class.” – Marcus G.
“I think that the class does challenge me to do my best, since we are advanced we are always being challenges to our abilities. I do feel successful, I am making good grades and completing my assignments on time. I am studying and I always have my attention on the teacher so I can get better academically. The use of our Chromebook helps a lot, and It kind of helps not using paper every day which can help the environment, but yes it does help with math assignments. The notes are very helpful, being able to study for what is on the test is helpful. Some are fun activities, but some are not because this is class and we all have to learn. Having a test every week does let me know personally how I am doing and what I need to do better. Our teacher is always helpful for if we are confused on a topic. He is always here to help us before or after school. He is available before and after school to help us get better in math.” – Joshua S.
“Firstly my math teacher Mr. Torres is a nice and funny teacher who pushes us to do our best. Accelerated math is hard, but it teaches you a lot so it may be hard but it's worth it. The Chromebooks are helpful because I'm not a neat person, but the Chromebook allows me to easily organize my stuff and allows new concepts to be fun with the educational games.” - Jacob K.
“Personally, I think that Accelerated math is the BEST, I feel that I am learning much more than in elementary. Though very challenging, it persuades me to study more. It's sometimes fun, and having a quiz makes me excited so I can see how I do. I am successful at times and a few times not so good. The Chromebook is also easier for studying. My teacher, Mr. Torres is available in the afternoon and morning and will help you at those times if you have problems at math. My teacher helps me in math while in class a lot when I don't understand things. I am very happy in this class and it even has upped my skills in math more than before!” – Benjamin G.
