Principles of Human Services is a Family and Consumer Sciences based course that focuses on a broad range of topics in FCS. Students are encouraged to explore subjects such as personality studies, professionalism and business ethics, and entrepreneurship. Many students find that during our studies of various types of occupations they find new and exciting careers in technology that they were not otherwise aware of. Our entrepreneurship project is based solely on student interest many students look at businesses in photography, culinary arts, physical fitness, or retail clothing. Students will also be exposed to focused careers, and learn necessary skills, in nutrition and culinary arts, fashion and interior design, and child development. PHS includes basic life skills such as budgeting and money management, goal setting, and conflict resolution.
Recommendations on participation in PHS: PHS is a high school credit class, and as such students are expected to participate at that level. Expectations include writing in complete sentences using proper grammar and structure, and ability to work alone and in groups successfully. A cumulative semester exam is required.
Students wishing to complete the high school credit should be willing to initiate and pace their own projects, and should be comfortable with self direction. PHS uses project based learning, and therefore, students who are interested should be willing to create and present products to show mastery of skills learned in class. PHS is technology based as it is a CTE (Career and Technology) course, so basic computer skills are recommended.
"In PHS you get to experience more life like situations that can interest and prepare you for your future. It's not just cooking or having a baby to take care of (which I thought when I joined), it's way more than that, but if you get your work done on time and done correctly you get to participate in lots of fun activities with your friends. Plus Mrs. Akers is a pretty cool teacher... just don't have your phone out during class." - Makayla N. 7th
“Sure there's hard work but that helps for when you get in the real world so you know what you're doing. Mrs. Akers class is fun but you MUST get your work done on time” . Victoria M. 7th grade
"PHS is a very immersive class. You get to participate in so many fun activities and projects, as well as hands on kitchen labs! You may even discover other careers that interest you, like I did! PHS is also much more than just cooking, you get to learn about the world we live in, in a fun, entertaining environment!" -Luca M.
"One of the greatest teachers Mrs. Akers when I had no hope in bringing my grade up. Mrs. Akers was there to help me and it was her that really allowed me to play basketball. That is why I am grateful for such an amazing teacher. P.S. Thank you Mrs. Akers." -Jace B.
