What is a Klein Prep/GT ELA class?
According to the College Board, the purpose of Klein Prep (KP) is “ to engage students in active, high-level learning, thereby ensuring that every … student develops the skills, habits of mind, and concepts they need to succeed in college.” It is expected that the KP student will “perform at rigorous academic levels”, “delve deeply into their work,” and “engage in high-level thinking.”
What are the habits of an Klein Prep student?
1. Independence - The student who enrolls in KP or GT language arts is expected to work independently with very little prompting from the teacher. These students can easily keep track of several assignments at once and will work independently at home with little prompting from parents. They will turn in their work in a timely manner.
2. Strong Reading Ability - KP/GT students should be able to keep up with class reading assignments. If for some reason the student falls behind, he/she will be responsible for scheduling independent reading time.
3. Readiness – Advanced students are expected to be ready for class each day. They should have classroom supplies, such as pens and paper, as well as classroom assignments that are due. Students should also prepare in advance for tests and quizzes.
4. Respect - Students are expected to respect not only themselves, but their peers and teachers. The curriculum is rigorous, so the KP/GT student understands that there is very little time for off-task behaviors.
