6th Grade World Cultures begins with foundational lessons that allow us to better study the world. We begin with map knowledge and skills including: continents, oceans, imaginary lines, determining coordinates using latitude and longitude, compass rose directions, and geographic features. We learn about culture and culture traits, including the world’s main religions, languages, and customs. We learn the types of governments and economic systems that exist around the world. We then take this basic knowledge and apply it to learn about places around the world. Again, the focus is the geographic features, culture, economic systems, and governments that exist in regions around the world. We first apply this knowledge in North America and South America. After the Americas, we head to Europe and Russia, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and we end our journey in Australia and Oceania. We integrate social study skills, such as map, diagram, and chart reading through the use of primary and secondary resources. We use technology to learn new information and create projects with our new-found knowledge. Our goal is to prepare students so that they can follow the path of learning in order to be better prepared for future social studies courses.
