School History

Mahaffey Elementary is the 31st elementary school in the Klein ISD. The school is named after the Mahaffey family who farmed and owned the land the school occupies today. Amos Mahaffey, Sr. came to the small community of Willow in 1865 shortly after the Civil War ended. The Mahaffey family originally immigrated to the colony of South Carolina from Ireland in 1765.

At one point in the early 1900s, the family owned 1,000+ acres of land, much of which was purchased by Amos Mahaffey, Sr. for $1 an acre.

Amos Mahaffey, Jr., son of Amos Mahaffey, Sr, served on the School Board for the Willow Creek School which became one of the founding rural schools of Klein ISD. At the time of his death, Amos Jr. was known to many as a pioneering member of early Harris County.

Other notable Mahaffeys include Charles Mahaffey, who was the first postmaster in Tomball, Robert Oran Mahaffey, who owned the first general store in Tomball and whose daughter was the first baby born in Tomball, and Charles Bryan Mahaffey, noted family and local historian. Descendants of the Mahaffey family have lived in the Klein area for the past 150 years and continue to do so to this day.

Core Curriculum

Language Arts

In the elementary ELA program, the emphasis is on the development of fundamental reading and writing skills. Reading instruction includes training in phonics, structural analysis, sight word recognition, context clues, vocabulary development, comprehension, study skills, and literary appreciation. Writing instruction teaches students how to use written language appropriately. Instruction includes specific training in grammar, spelling, handwriting, word usage, punctuation, and capitalization, as well as more generalized training in composing written expressions. Skills in speaking and listening are also taught with the instruction for reading and writing. These skills are taught through the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.

At the elementary level, students build a foundation of basic understandings for the following: number operation and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry and spatial reasoning; measurement; and probability and statistics. Problem solving is a part of daily learning for our students.

At the elementary level, students learn science basic skills and how to identify components of the natural world. Students study life, earth, and physical science concepts. All students benefit from the Science Lab and time with our Science Lab teacher, Ms. Swailes.

Social Studies

In grades K-12, students build a foundation in history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science, technology and society, and social studies skills.
