The 84th Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1842 in the spring of 2015, providing public school districts the opportunity to become a District of Innovation. To qualify, an eligible school district (one whose most recent academic performance rating is at least acceptable) must adopt an up to five-year innovation plan according to the Texas Education Code. Klein ISD is utilizing HB 1842 in order to obtain more local control in various areas that will make teaching and learning more impactful for every student.

Klenk Elementary & Zwink Elementary

The Dual Language Design Team is building the program from the ground up, based on best practice and research. Klenk and Zwink will co-pilot the Spanish Two-way Dual Language Pathway and Klenk will also pilot a Vietnamese One-way Dual Language Pathway. Students receive instruction in both languages beginning with a Kindergarten cohort, with a plan to add a grade level each subsequent year. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to reimagine learning and build community through language pathways.

Klein ISD has been recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as one of three model school districts for family engagement in Texas. We provide families with the tools necessary to better support and engage with students such as family/community resource centers, adult literacy programs, parent liaisons, Parent University classes and home visits to improve parenting skills. The Family Engagement Program empowers families to work collaboratively with campus staff and support their children from Promise to Purpose.

French Elementary

Fine arts integration is an approach to teaching when students show understanding through an art form. They have partnered with The Houston Ballet to bring their teaching artists into the classroom. French Elementary will be fully integrated in the arts as they continue to bring in trainers and teaching artists from other local organizations to work with staff and students in all of the arts disciplines.

Roth Elementary & Intermediate School Pilots

A partnership between Roth Elementary and the district’s Advanced Academics Services department is piloting a new pathway for gifted learners in grades 1-5. Students will be challenged in Language Arts, Problem-based learning, Latin, STEM and Philosophy curricula in two multi-age classrooms: a 1st-2nd grade class and a 3rd-5th grade class.

Additionally, a second pilot program at 3 Klein ISD Intermediate schools for gifted 6th grade students utilizing gifted curriculum will allow collaboration with Roth through digital networking mentorships and thematic family engagement nights that integrate art, music and history.
