Teacher Voice

Principles of Human Services is a Family and Consumer Sciences based course that focuses on a broad range of topics in FCS. Students are encouraged to explore careers in consumer services, mental health services, early childhood development services, family and community services, fashion/interior design and personal care services. Many students find that during our studies of various types of occupations they find new and exciting careers in that they were not otherwise aware of.

In addition, PHS includes basic life skills such as budgeting and money management, wellness and nutrition, goal setting and decision-making, conflict resolution and communication, personality studies, professionalism and business ethics.

Recommendations on participation in PHS: PHS is a high school credit class, and as such will include high school level expectations and a semester exam. PHS uses project based learning, and therefore students who are interested should be willing to create self-directed research projects and presentations. PHS is technology based, as it is a CTE (Career and Technology) course, so basic computer skills are recommended.
