Scientific Research & Design/ Envirothon

Teacher Voice

This class prepares you for the Texas State Envirothon - the largest Environmental Science competition in the state, held each year at various natural sites within the state. Students in this informative, hands-on class learn not only about forestry, wildlife, aquatics, soils, and environmental issues, but how to work together as a team to problem solve and then present their solutions to experts in the field.

Student Voice

I like the presentations we do with posters. The activities we do outside are interactive and interesting.

To be honest, I used to have no interest in learning about nature or the environment. This all changed, however, when I took this class and it managed to become one of the most interesting and mostly fun classes I have taken in high school.

This course has really brought me closer to nature especially right here in our own area. I've gained a better understanding and appreciation of our local environment. I love the constant competitiveness of the class pushing each of us students to do the best we can.

I like this class because I got to meet new people and make new friends. I like the fun activities and interactions where I get to learn by going out and experiencing the material.

As a Sophomore coming into a environment of new subjects that I haven't thought about, the class has helped me obtain a deeper understanding of different organisms' purposes. Envirothon has also been a connection of different age groups to come together and cooperate on a cause that could be altered in a respected manner.

This course is very close to nature and very hands-on! I love the workflow and projects we receive. Going on trips outside with the class has better informed me of what actually occurs in our environment. The class size is enjoyable and the relationship with each student is very close, like a family! I love how everyone is different and we work together to better each other!

I liked the hands-on work with the class, and the learning experience is in the field. There aren't many times where you aren't furthering your education in the natural world.

The experience is one of a kind, you get to learn so many things that you would never learn in any other science class. If you know anything about the environment, this class is the one to take. You only have to take one actual test and plenty of projects (not too many). You get to be outdoors and get a hands on learning experience. Just to top things off, you get to have the big fish tank for the class year.

I enjoyed this class very much because of the small class size. I love going outdoors and being close with nature. I've learned so much from this course and I prefer this over any science course. I enjoy the projects we do together as a group.
