Click or scroll (right) to take a look at our month on Twitter!
We started off with MakerSpaces. Monsters, robots and harvest pumpkins! Super fun!
Students got excited about Mars this month! 1st and 2nd graders used PebbleGo to jump start their #KleininSpace research. Some of our researchers even had a little fun with Mrs. Strole making a video about what they would choose to take on a trip to Mars. Hey...who's that green guy?
3rd grade students connected via Skype with one of our favorite Texas authors, Nancy Churnin!
She read us her inspiring book, Manjhi Moves a Mountain, and then we got to ask her a little about her writing process! She even taught us a little sign language!

FlipGrid has quickly become a go-to tool for student voice in classrooms of all ages, so this summer when they announced that the pro version would be free for all educators, we were thrilled! Teachers had become accustomed to using FlipGrid in all sorts of ways, including individual use in stations during small group or “intervention” time, when students truly need to be in charge of their own learning!
With this new, full-featured product, logging in needs to be a little different now, as I learned last week! Student authentication through Google took far too long for our 3rd graders in the library. I knew that even younger primary students could not accomplish the log-in process unaided. I knew there must be a better way!
That’s where Twitter came in! I reached out to @FlipGrid on Twitter over the Labor Day weekend, thinking that eventually they might get back to me. It wasn’t long before a representative got back to me though--and it was early on a weekend holiday morning! In fact, they spent a good amount of time with me explaining how to make the log-in process better for our young students. If you’re a modern educator and haven’t really given Twitter a shot, this is yet another reason that it is worth your time investment! SO many companies are open to connecting with their customers through Twitter, and they want to build a strong relationships that will lead to success in the classroom!
Note: FlipGrid's instructions for creating QR codes for student log-in are here!

What better time to dust off the old blog than during our Not-So-Annual #PoetryChallenge!
Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Day kicked off the challenge this year in mid April, so we've extended #PoetryMonth through May 11! Each morning on the announcements, a few classes share an original poem with the world, and they challenge another homeroom to write a poem in response. So far, we have seen funny poems, acrostics, science cinquains, and even a rap!
Here is a slide deck with all our classes' fabulous poems!
Wow! How could we start the school year off in a more exciting way?
Not only are our fabulous Bobcats coming back to school on August 21, but between 11:46 am and 2:45 pm, we will be partially in the path of the solar eclipse! This will be a first day of school that we won't forget for a long time!
Watch NASA's official livestream of the eclipse here!
Citizen scientists all over North America will share their photos of the eclipse. This collection of photos will help scientists studying our solar system for many years to come!
This is NASA's official interactive map of the eclipse. See the path of the eclipse around the world!
Join 3rd Grade teacher John Hartmann and his students near St. Louis, as they reflect on their experience during the eclipse. They are in the path of the full eclipse, so they should have interesting observations to share with everyone! In this FlipGrid, these young scientists will act as primary sources for information about this historical event. What a great way to learn what a primary source really is!
National Geographic Explanation of the Solar Eclipse
This video recalls the solar eclipse of 1979, and describes just how amazing it is to experience in person!
Great site for teachers getting ready to share this exciting event with their students!
Eclipse video list for you to consider. Check it out!
