Fall
Narrow your list of colleges to between five and 10 (could be less, could be more). Meet with a counselor about your college choices and, if you haven’t done so yet, download college applications and financial aid forms. Add colleges in your Naviance "thinking about folder" and when you are ready to apply, move them to your "applying to folder" Plan to visit as many of these colleges as possible (in person, virtually or through social media).
Attend College Fairs to help narrow down choices.
Create a master list or calendar that includes (Naviance can help you do this):
Tests you’ll take and their fees, dates, and registration deadlines
College application due dates
Required financial aid application forms and their deadlines (aid applications may be due before college applications)
Other materials you’ll need (recommendations, transcripts, etc.)
Your high school’s application processing deadlines
Ask a counselor to help you request a fee waiver (upon verification that you are eligible) if you can’t afford application or test fees.
Take the SAT® or ACT one more time: Many seniors retake the SAT and/or ACT in the fall. Additional course work since your last test could help you boost your performance. Plus you already know what to expect on test day. (For more selective schools they may also need SAT subject tests). Due to COVID19 some schools may make testing optional. Please be sure to check with the respective schools or on their admissions websites.
Be sure to have your SAT and/or ACT scores sent to the colleges you’re applying to; directly from CollegeBoard and/or ACT organizations. (if need be)
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): To apply for most financial aid, you’ll need to complete the FAFSA. Oct. 1 is the first day you can file the FAFSA. Please click on the Financial Aid link on the Senior College page for more information.
Attend a FAFSA workshop help by Hawai`i P20 every Wednesday held from Sept 16 - Oct 28 https://tinyurl.com/HIfinaidnights2020
There will three virtual meeting opportunities to assist individual families with the FAFSA. Registration TBA
October 15th, 2020 5:30 pm
November 19th, 2020 530 pm
January 6th or 7th 530 pm
Complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE®: PROFILE is an online application used by certain colleges and scholarship programs to determine eligibility for their aid dollars. Needed only by selective schools and some scholarships (KSBE).
Prepare early decision/early action or rolling admission applications as soon as possible. Colleges may require test scores and applications between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 for early decision/action/priority admission. Be sure you know that early decision means it is a binding application. If you get in you have to attend that school.
Ask a counselor or teacher for recommendations if you need them. Your Resume and Senior Student Profile Survey should be updated with the most current information in Naviance. Please be sure if at all possible to first ask in person the teacher(s) you want a letter of recommendation from, you need to follow up with a letter of recommendation request by using Naviance. The letter of recommendation request option is located under your "colleges I'm applying to" folder. Request should be made no less than 2 weeks prior to your deadline. you should personally push up the deadline so that you can ensure it is properly submitted. For example if the deadline is Nov. 15th place in your request to the recommender a Nov. 9th deadline instead. That request will be sent via email to the teacher(s) you are requesting from. Naviance is great to track and house those requests. The description of your requests should be detailed and specific with dates that it is due, the method of which teachers will send their letter, and where to find your Resume and Senior Profile if needed. For each recommendation that needs to be mailed, provide a stamped, addressed envelope and any college forms required. Instructional Video

Essay: Write first drafts and ask teachers and others to read them if you’re submitting essays. If you’re applying for early decision, finish the essays for that application now. View "The Essay" presentation that took place in the summer for tips on writing your essay. The presentation video can be found on the KKHS website under "counseling" page and "college" tab.
Complete at least one college application by or before Thanksgiving, unless you are applying to all your schools by an early/priority application.
Request Transcripts: to send your transcripts to colleges you must first have your parent complete and submit the Parent Consent form by filling out this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdBSmfdoAJieIgELxY78kU79Oj9suqsJWa7kY76QwIApcGdvg/viewform. proper forms need to be submitted at least two weeks before the colleges require them and be sure if there are proper forms to go along with, to send them to your counselor, Mrs. Manlansing or registrar, Mrs. Uyehara. Once the parent consent form is complete the option in Naviance will be turned on so you can request transcripts to be sent to the respectful colleges and/or scholarship organizations. The Request Transcript option can be found on your Naviance account, via "colleges I'm applying to", "manage transcripts" and can only be requested if your schools are listed in that folder; made active.
