Guidelines for Yearbook/Graphic Design & Newspaper/Graphic Design
Welcome Back!
I am so pleased to have you in my class and as a part of this CTE pathway. I believe this program provides an invaluable service to the school and all of its students. By taking Yearbook/Graphic Design & Newspaper/Graphic Design, you are going to be a part of producing student publications that hold the memories of this school year. We will use skills like writing news stories, feature stories, editorials, and creating and designing headlines. We will also learb more about photography, design, ethics, interviewing, reporting, sports writing, typography, advertising, public relations, and a little about the history of journalism and where it is headed in the workforce. We will also better learn to use the computer programs that help us create our two publications, mainly Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. We use the very latest in InDesign software and technology. You will learn about the organization of our yearbook staff and newspaper staff by being an integral part of it yourself. This course is work but it is lots of fun.
I love working at KHS! I am a Bulldog! And you, my students, are my WHY! You are the reason I love it and teach at KHS.
Have a wonderful semester & year!
Go Bulldogs!
Mrs. Brittany Cleveland
GRADES:
Daily grades 50%
Major grades 50%
LATE/MAKE-UP WORK:
High school students are expected to ask about any missed work and turn in their own late work without a reminder. Students can ask for make-up work before the bell rings for class to begin. Missed work due during an absence is due the day you return to class. Missed exams or quizzes are to be made up outside of the regular class period within three days of the absence. See the student handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule time either before school or after school.
Please be aware: School activities are NOT acceptable excuses for late work. Arrangements should be made in advance of the missed class. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the teacher of upcoming absences. Arrangements will be made regarding missed work. General classwork will be expected early or on the day of the activity (Please drop off work before leaving campus).
LATE WORK POLICY
Late one day after due date - 10 points
Late two days after due date - 20 points
Late three days after due date - 30 points
On the 4th day the maximum grade will be a 50.
*This late work policy does not apply to make-up work. A student is allowed one day per one day of absence to complete
and turn in any missed assignments without any grading penalties.
SUPPLIES FOR CLASS:
Most of our supplies are in our classroom setting and provided by the KHS CTE Department. But, I do expect students to have basic supplies every day in a bag/backpack they keep up with.
Backpack Items for success:
notebook paper
Ink pens for written work, AND an editing pen (Fun colors are great!)
highlighter(s)
pencil(s) with eraser(s)
********One box of Tissue or bottle Germ-X provided sometime during the year would be greatly appreciated but are not required.*******
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
Come to class on time, prepared, and ready to participate actively. Joining our class REMIND is required.
Believe in yourself.
Respect yourself, respect others, and RESPECT THE K.
Keep all food, drink, candy, and gum away from the computers.
Use of personal electronic devices must be authorized by the teacher and used for educational purposes only. We do use our cell phones in our class for ad sales, interviews, and other staff purposes sometimes, so students may use phones for approved class activities.
Follow all policies in the KHS Student Handbook.
A NOTE ABOUT SKYWARD FOR PARENTS:
Skyward is a tool for parents to use to communicate with their children about grades and attendance. KISD hopes by offering this program, you will be able to sit down with your child and discuss any low grades or missing assignments. We, as teachers and parents, would like to offer the following suggestions in order for you to get the most benefit from this opportunity.
1. Remember that grades accumulate over a quarter and fluctuate until we can gather an overall picture of how your child is doing. Your child will have some grades higher than others while some might be lower. Please watch their progress and encourage them, but know that plenty of grades will be taken.
2. If your child has a missing grade, please teach your child to take responsibility for turning it in. Please talk to your child about what the assignment is and what steps he/she needs to do to get the assignment in to his/her teacher. Most likely, the student knows or has the assignment and can clear up the grade by turning it in.
3. Please understand it takes time to grade, review, and offer good feedback on many assignments like projects, articles, and tests. Please give the teacher time to review the papers and enter the grade. As soon as the entire class is graded, the grades will be entered. Our goal is within 3 business days.
4. If your child is still confused about a missing assignment after he/she talks to the teacher, an email to the teacher for further advice is great. I am willing to help, and together we will help your child achieve success.

I am SO EXCITED to have you in class.
Let’s make this a great year and help tell the Kilgore High School story!
