Earn a passing score on Ohio’s high school Algebra I and English II tests. Students who do not pass the test will be offered additional support and must retake the test at least once. Students can also meet this requirement by meeting the college ready score on the ACT or SAT.
Students that do not pass the Algebra I or English II state tests must receive remedial supports and retake the test at least once before being eligible to demonstrate competency in alternative ways.
Alternative Demonstrations of Competency:
Earn credit for one college-level math and/ or college-level English course through Ohio’s College Credit Plus program.
Earn a remediation-free score in the math or English subject areas on the ACT or SAT. To demonstrate competency in English II, a student must be remediation-free in BOTH English and reading on the ACT.
Career Experience and Technical Skill
Complete two demonstrations to show competency, at least one of which must be a foundational option.
Foundational:
a. Earn a cumulative score of proficient or higher on three or more WebXams in a single career pathway
b. Earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field
c. Complete a pre-apprenticeship in the student’s chosen career field or, for students ages 18 and older, show evidence of acceptance into an apprenticeship program that is registered with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council after high school.
d. Obtain a state-issued license for practice in a vocation that requires an examination was added as an additional option.
Supporting:
a. Complete a 250-hour work-based learning experience with evidence of positive evaluations.
b. Earn the workforce readiness score on WorkKeys
c. Earn the OhioMeansJobs-Readiness Seal.
Show evidence that you have signed a contract to enter a branch of the U.S. armed services upon graduation.
Meet the requirements and criteria established for the readiness seal, including demonstration of work-readiness and professional competencies.
Earn one of six Honors Diplomas outlined below:
1. Academic Honors Diploma;
2. International Baccalaureate Honors Diploma;
3. Career-Tech Honors Diploma;
4. STEM Honors Diploma;
5. Arts Honors Diploma;
6. Social Science and Civic Engagement Honors Diploma.
Earn remediation-free scores on the ACT or SAT. Visit the Department’s website to see current remediation-free scores.
A student can:
1. Earn a score of proficient or higher on the biology end-of-course exam; or
2. Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or
3. Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program; or
4. Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an advanced science course.
Advanced science courses contain rigorous content appropriate for grades 11 and 12. An advanced science course builds on the concepts and skills developed in the physical science and biology courses detailed in Ohio’s Learning Standards for Science.
Appropriate advanced science courses include:
Chemistry, physics or other physical sciences;
Advanced biology or other life sciences;
Astronomy;
Physical geology or other Earth or space science; and
Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) Earth, life or physical science courses.
A student can:
1. Earn a score of proficient or higher on both the American history and American government end-of-course exams; or
2. Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams; or
3. Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in appropriate classes taken through the College Credit Plus program; or
4. Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in both an American History course and an American Government course offered by the student’s high school.
A student can:
1. Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on an appropriate Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam; or
2. Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a “B” or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program; or
3. Complete a course offered through the district or school that meets guidelines developed by the Department.
Meet the requirements and criteria, including proficiency requirements on assessments in a world language and English.
A student can:
1. Earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field.
2. Obtain a state-issued license for practice in a vocation that requires an examination.
Provide evidence that a student has enlisted in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces; or Participate in an approved JROTC program.
Complete 3 credits in the areas of Fine and Performing Arts with a grade of C or higher. All courses considered as Fine and Performing Arts are listed in the Kirtland High School Program of Studies.
Complete a total of 40 hours of community service during their four years of high school. It is recommended that students complete 10 hours of community service each year. Students who transfer to Kirtland High School will only be held accountable for 10 hours per year of enrollment. Students will use the Community Service Form to document volunteerism, which needs to be signed by the volunteer coordinator and turned into the Counseling Office. In the Senior year, earned hours must be documented by the Seniors’ last day of classes.
Complete 6 activities during their high school career in any non-academic school-sponsored program(s). Only 4 of the 6 activity requirements may be obtained by participating in school-sponsored athletic programs. One season of a sport is equivalent to one activity requirement. Students are able to participate in consecutive years of the same school-sponsored activity to earn their requirements. Students who transfer to Kirtland High School will only be held accountable to complete two activities per year of enrollment. Student participation will be verified with a roster or official attendance record for the program.
