Student Wellbeing

In the UK today, an estimated five children in every classroom has a mental health problem.

The pressures young people face have changed; awareness of the issues has grown but social stigma and misconceptions remain. Here at King's Academy Ringmer we want to provide reassurance & advice to help our students make positive choices regarding their mental health by providing them with the tools & confidence to look after themselves in the best possible way.

It is also important to remember that emotional wellbeing is a clear indicator of academic achievement, success and satisfaction in later life.

With this in mind, we are fully committed to ensuring that all of our students can get the support they need, when they need it, no matter what.

We have already prioritised wellbeing in our School Improvement Plan & have a well established Whole School Approach initiative.

What else are we already doing to promote positive wellbeing?

  • Delivering positive wellbeing into our curriculum through our PSHE & Tutor Programme

  • By Appointing a Designated Mental Health Lead

  • By expanding our Pastoral Team with the addition of Head of Years.

  • Providing wellbeing training to all staff & further opportunity throughout the year to develop their knowledge & understanding in this area

  • By ensuring that we have members of staff who are trained in Mental Health First Aid

  • Creating individual Resilience Action Plans (RAP) which provide students & staff with valuable information regarding unique coping strategies, warning signs & signposting where to get support when needed.

  • By implementing a simple & effective referral system. Any member of staff who has concerns regarding a student's wellbeing can make a referral to the lead mental health

  • Training year 10 students in restorative peer mentoring . These students then mentor some of our KS3 students using active listening & restorative approaches to resolves low level conflicts & restore confidence & self-esteem.

  • 1-1 & small group workshops, run over a 6 week period, on different mental health issues, led by our lead mental health.

  • By appointing an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) who has received specific training by educational psychologists to support the emotional development of our young students.

  • By providing small group intervention sessions during tutor time, led by our amazing teaching assistants. Topics running this term are: Calm, Nurturing, Social & Communication, Talk about Teenagers & Worry Busters

  • By having regular student council meetings -to encourage student voice

  • Raising awareness of mental health & emotional wellbeing by participating in annual charity events such as World Mental Health Day, Anti Bullying Week, Odd Socks Day, Time to Talk Day plus many more.

  • Training some of our young students to be wellbeing experts. The Student Wellbeing Ambassador Programme (SWAP) was launched in March 2021. Up to 35 students from across all year groups are trained in the the science of wellbeing, They run different campaigns throughout the year, raising awareness & trying to breakdown some of the stigma involved around mental heath. They work closely with our peer mentors to ensure that wellbeing is everyone's responsibility & that all students have a voice without discrimination.

  • Two of our staff have been trained to become coaches in the S.T.I.L.L Method. This method brings together the best techniques from Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Neuro Linguistics Programming & Self Development. They are workshops for both students & parents which are fun & involve a step by step process to help overcome anxiety.

Everyone's Invited - A movement committed to eradicating rape culture

Over the last week the website 'Everyone's Invited' has drawn much publicity for the shocking testimonials from over 10,000 people describing sexual abuse by other young people. As a result, yesterday [Wednesday] the government announced that they were launching a review into sexual abuse in schools.

NEW Dedicated NSPCC helpline 0800 136 663

The new helpline will provide both children and adults who are potential victims of sexual abuse in schools with the appropriate support and advice. This includes how to contact the police and report crimes if they wish. The helpline will also provide support to parents and professionals too.

MeeToo App for iOS and Android

MeeToo is a multi-award winning, free, anonymous app where young people can talk about difficult things. Built on research showing the positive impact of peer support for mental health, MeeToo provides a safe, pre-moderated (by humans) space for young people aged 11+ to experiment with opening up about whatever may be on their mind.

Posts can be responded to by other users, as well as a team of trained university psychology students and MeeToo counsellors who help to guide discussions and ensure that no post goes unanswered.

Moderators check every post and reply before they go live to ensure the safety and anonymity of our users, and our counsellors uphold a sophisticated system for monitoring and tracking potential safeguarding risks.

MeeToo supports over 6,000 young people each month. It is featured on the NHS Apps Library and promoted by more than 1,000 schools in the UK.
