Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra is designed to prepare students for Algebra at the high school level. It is taught using a combination of textbook work, projects, and independent review assignments. Because students at this level come into the course with a wide variety of abilities, every effort is made to tailor learning to the student. At the end of the year, students will test for Algebra. Not every student will be ready for Algebra in 8th grade; even students who work hard and do well in the course may not have the retention and skills necessary for success at the next level, and it is better to review material than try to move forward on a shaky foundation.

Grading in this course will be based on several factors: in-class participation, tests and quizzes, book/worksheet assignments, and projects. Students will have a significant amount of responsibility in this course to complete independent work. In addition, this course will sometimes make use of a rotational model, due to the length of the double period, the variation in math background between students, and scheduling with 8th graders. This will provide students ample opportunity to complete assignments and projects during school hours when I am available to answer questions.
