Participation & Attendance Policy
Week 1: All students must check in online the first week of each course. Unfortunately, San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) requires the instuctor to drop students who do not meet the Week 1 check-in deadline. This policy is in place to provide waitlisted students to be added into the class and to ensure proper reporting to the State of California. Be sure to attend the first online Zoom session and contribute to the first activities on Canvas. If you have any issue attending the Zoom session or logging into Canvas to complete the assignment, be sure to contact the instructor immediately.
Attendance or Participation is not measured by the overall number of hours that you ‘log-in’ or time spent in Canvas; however, weekly attendance and participation is tracked to encourage students to engage in online class communication, class discussions and activities.
Inactivity is problematic because online education policies at SDCCE require instructors to drop inactive students. In this class, inactivity indicates enough "absences" to drop a student. Absences are typically defined as missing a week or more online Zoom session, quizzes, discussions, or assignments. These are better defined in the course syllabus that the instructor will provide students on the first day of class. The instructor will be checking-in on your well-being throughout the program and sending you messages if there are any non-attendance issues. If you receive a message, please respond promptly to let the instructor know your current situation and work out a plan to stay in the program. Usually students are only dropped if they wish to no longer remain in the program or when there is a pattern of non-communication and lack of attendance.
If you need more time to engage in the course activities, just communicate with the instructor. The instructor will be checking-in on students during the online sessions and in our Canvas inbox (messaging system). I addition to communicating with the instructor, it is also highly recommended to talk to your counselor if you no longer want to participate. It's totally fine. Sometimes we just have to choose our own learning environment and here at SDCCE we are all committed to making sure that you are in the right program at the right time in your personal and professional path.
