Dear KHS students: do you feel like you don’t have enough time during the mornings to wake up, get ready, and have a good breakfast? Some of your peers might disagree. In a recent survey of a few KHS students, opinions were mixed about an earlier school start time.
Due to having few hours of sleep, getting ready for school with little time, or just taking breakfast on the go, many students find themselves tired in school. This makes them unable to learn some of the materials that teachers are teaching them. Dakota Loring, a junior, stated that she’s “tired, can’t learn, hungry, needs snacks.” A few other students agree with the starting time being too early and pushing back the time to a little later for more rest. Susie Fournier-Nason, for example, also agrees with Dakota and would “rather stay later.”
On the other hand, a few other KHS students argued for an earlier starting time. One - Phillip Purcell - even stated that school hours should be from 5am to 12pm” ( Phillip Purcell). Abby Danielson added that she wanted it to start at 6:00 because it would create “more time out of school.”
Waking up earlier could be a struggle, though, and other students expressed preference for the current hours, which help them to get home earlier. Attilea Jarvis even said that “School starts at a reasonable starting time” and argued that school should end at 1:30 for more time for homework. It would be super efficient having the rest of your day getting caught up with homework and whatever else activities that KHS students do at the end of the school day.
Would you rather end earlier or start school early? Do you want to rush out the door in the morning unenergized, or would you rather wake up with enough time to be ready for the day? ■
