Division 3 Expectations

Division 3 Parent/Student Handbook

2019-2020

The students’ work ethics and use of class time are important to their success in Division 3.

Respect

Students must have respect for themselves, respect for others, and respect for KSC. This school is a bullying free school and we expect all students to treat everyone around them with LOVE, CARE, RESPECT, and HUMILITY.

Responsibility

Students will be responsible for catching up with the material covered, assigned, and due during their absence. Missed handouts will be provided by your teacher and students should make an effort to get missed notes from a classmate/teacher. Assignments due during a class missed for permissible reasons will be accepted, without penalty, at the beginning of the next class attended. Please note that 10% per day will be taken off of an assignment’s final marks for every day the student extends the submission. If an assignment or project is late by more than two weeks or ten school days, the student will automatically receive a zero in that particular assignment/project.

If a student is absent from the class on the day of a quiz or exam for permissible reasons, the student will write the missed quiz/exam during the next attended class or during a lunch hour. Students should check their google classroom/class website and update their agenda regularly in order to keep track of deadlines.

Extended Vacation Responsibilities

If your child will be away for an extended period of time (i.e. more than a week), the school and teachers must be notified in advance. It is the student’s responsibility to check the class websites for all subjects on a regular basis and keep up with any work that is assigned to him/her while away. Upon returning, the student is responsible for making up any missed projects/quizzes/tests within a two week period. Anything that is not completed within these two weeks will be considered incomplete and will receive a mark of 0.

Required Textbook and Materials

All of the required materials and textbooks must be brought to every class. Additional time spent returning to/from lockers will qualify as being late. The students are also expected to keep the textbooks in the condition they receive them and are not supposed to write on them. All the textbooks will be returned to the library after the final examination. The school charges $120 to replace a science textbook.

Toys, Cell Phone and Other Precious Belongings in Classroom

The school strongly discourages students from bringing toys and/or other precious belongings to class, as they may be lost, stolen and/or broken. The school policy does not permit cell phones in classrooms. Should you have a cell phone, it is requested that the phone is turned off during school time and left in your locker. The use of technology in classrooms such as a Chromebook, laptop, iPod or iPad is up to the teacher’s discretion. Please check with your subject specific teacher before bringing your personal technology to classroom.

Effective Locker Use and Transition Time

The students are expected to use their lockers properly and are not allowed to leave perishable food items in their lockers over the weekend/break. Please keep your belongings locked and do not share your locker code with anyone. Kindly keep your lockers organized so that there is less time wasted when retrieving the required material. The students are expected to be present in their classrooms within the first five minutes of the class and further delaying their break without any permission note will be considered as a late entry. If a student has accumulated three late entries, it will result into academic detention.

Homework/ Extra Help

Students are expected to hand in homework assignments on time. If there are extenuating circumstances that prohibit the student from completing an assignment on time, they should contact their teacher as soon as possible. Assignments and projects are required to be handed in on time. If there is no assigned homework for a day, students are encouraged to review their class notes or to work on an assignment ahead of the deadline. Time management and planning will reduce stress and help the student in preparing for their classes. You are encouraged to approach me right away if you have any difficulties with a concept or assignment and we can set up a time for extra help. If a student has not finished three assignments in a month without any excusable reason, it will result into an academic detention.

Leaving the Classroom

When students are at school, they are expected to be in their scheduled class and not to be wandering the halls. If a student needs to leave the classroom for any reason, the teacher will make note of it in the Hall Pass section of your agenda and provide you with a Hall Pass. If you are out of the classroom without a Hall Pass you will receive a DT.

Parent-Teacher Communication

Open communication between a student’s home and school is vital to their success. Teachers will be communicating with you on a regular basis through division newsletters that cover the details of academic and extracurricular events. Teachers will also use your child’s agenda and class website to provide you with other school-related information. It is the responsibility of both the student and the parent to ensure that the agenda is reviewed. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress over the course of the year, please do not hesitate to contact the specific teacher(s). Email communication is the most efficient way to respond to any questions or concerns that may arise. If emailing is not possible, you may call the school and we can set up an appointment, if necessary. Please note that it is best to phone the office for emergencies.

Checking Progress on Maplewood

You can view up-to-date marks on the Maplewood program. Please check with the office if you have any issues with logging into the program. Parents are also encouraged to attend all conferences and parent-teacher interviews to further discuss their child’s progress.

Absences/Late Entry/Early Arrivals & Departure

Coming to school on time is important for a student’s education. School begins promptly at 8:10 a.m. and supervision of students will only be provided from 7: 55 a.m. If your child will be late or absent for any reason, please inform the school. Upon arriving late, students are expected to report directly to the office. Should you need to pick up your child prior to dismissal time, please notify the teacher and also check out your child at the office. When picking up students at the end of the day, we ask parents to wait in the hallway or outside of the building until the students have been dismissed.

Birthday Parties and other celebrations

It is our personal request that students should not buy cakes, pizzas or any other snacks to celebrate their birthday parties in school. Above all, if you have a desire to celebrate your child’s birthday in school, please inform me at least one week in advance so that arrangements can be made during the lunch hours. Khalsa School is a vegetarian and nut aware school, so please keep that in mind before choosing any treats for the students.

Healthy Snacks and Lunch

Kindly assist your child in packing a healthy snack/lunch for the school. A child’s success in many areas can be improved by having healthy food habits. Please discourage your child from bringing energy drinks, carbonated beverages, or an excessively sugary snack/lunch to school.

Uniform

As members of our Khalsa School Community, students are required to be in proper school uniform (Regular or Full) at all times except on Bana or Casual Days, which are noted in our school calendar. The students are expected to be well groomed and their uniforms are to be clean. Please note that a uniform infraction form will be filled and sent home in case your child is not having a proper uniform.

In closing, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your homeroom teacher at any time. Thank you and we will look forward to another great year!
