Welcome to Grade 6!

Welcome to my site!

This site is for Grade 6 students in Mrs. Kahlon's Class and their parents.

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to have your child in my class this year 2017-2018. This will be a fantastic school year where your child will continue to develop independence, responsibility, explore interests and learn about the world we live in. I will be teaching Grade 6-Social Studies, Math and English Language Arts and Science. I am excited for the school year ahead!

Homework Expectations

I generally try to give the students enough class time to complete assignments. However, as the due date approaches, your child may have some finishing up to do. If students are using their class time wisely, there should not be much homework assigned. I will post major assignments, projects, test and quiz dates on this site under Homework 6. I give a lot of notice for due dates so that the students have enough time to prepare and finish their work. Please have your child speak with me regarding conflicts prior to the due date, if necessary. I also post all assignments, projects, textbook pages, lesson sheets, etc. on the Khalsa School Calgary Website – Mrs. Kahlon, under curriculum in the appropriate subject folder. If your child is away for any reason, all of the work he/she requires is included in the subject folders.

Study Habits

Grade six is an important year in terms of developing good study habits. If students do not have assigned homework for the evening, they should be spending 15 – 20 minutes reviewing material covered in a subject area. The vocabulary in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies is challenging. Regular review for short periods of time throughout the year will be extremely beneficial to your child at the end of the year when writing the Provincial Achievement Tests. I also encourage you to have your child share his/her class work with you on a regular basis. That way, you will be able to ask questions and see how well he/she understands the material throughout a particular unit.

Contact Me

Please contact me anytime. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at jyoti.kahlon@khalsaschoolcalgary.ca, I will do my absolute best to respond within a 24-hour period or phone me at 403-293-7712 extn. 288.

Sixth grade is an exciting time as students emerge as “middle schoolers” with unique social, emotional, and academic characteristics. I look forward to working together with you to prepare for the transition to middle school! Parent support will be greatly appreciated throughout the entire school year.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jyoti Kahlon (M.Sc., B.Ed.)

Parent Tips

I encourage you as parents/guardians to be actively involved in your child's school life. You can find the curriculum link for your child’s grade and subjects at: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/index.html

Uniform Policy: Students need to -

  • Wear their proper school uniform each day, unless otherwise stated, including a change of shoes.

*Please Note: Bring Agenda and all the required materials for the day daily to the classroom as you won't be permitted to do that during the class time (homework, agenda, gym strip, books…)

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
