The Burien Solar Punk Festival : A One-Day Experience of Entertainment, Community, Environment and Technology
The Burien Solar Punk Festival
If there is one simple fact that may just change your thoughts on renewable power, it's this one.
“Solar Punk” is the festival theme, which envisions a future where community and technology are integrated to create a self-sustaining system. In this event, attendees will learn about alternative self-sustaining ways to work and power their daily lives. It is an iconic one-day event that celebrates the best of Burien and empowers the community by bringing eco-friendly businesses together to showcase what they do and connect them to the community as potential employers. Business, Arts, and Culture are the three most powerful drivers of community participation and engagement in Burien and the pillars upon which the festival is based. The proceeds from The Burien Solar Punk Festival will be utilized to support: Key Tech Labs Green Jobs Expo, a Mini Job’s Fair, a Small Business Expo, funds for the new micro solar system, and stipends for the youth Green Pre-Apprenticeship Program
At this year’s Burien Solar Punk Festival you will see green technologies, Like an air-to-water generator, that creates clean drinking water out of the air. You will also see a microgrid solar system that generates energy from sunlight. We even have a farmbot which is an open-source CNC machine that will weed, water, and seed a garden bed all by itself. The future is now and the future is green.

The Burien Solar Punk Festival is an iconic one-day event that brings people together in one spot to present their enterprises and connect job seekers with green companies and professional prospects.
In Burien, there are limited opportunities for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) people and businesses to interact, network, and enjoy the culture together.
Join us for a full day of engagement and networking, followed by a nighttime opportunity to camp under the stars, see a culturally relevant movie, enjoy everything from locally created beer to an AR Art wall, and even drink harvested rainwater.
The Burien Solar Punk Festival is a Key Tech Labs event that aims to bring together technology, art, culture, and community in one place to teach us about the future.
This event has four major components that occur concurrently throughout the day.
Pop-up Farmer's Market: Community members can wander around and visit booths showcasing technology, local green enterprises, and cuisine.
Green Jobs Expo: the solar energy, green construction, and rainwater harvesting industries will be featured at the Green Jobs Expo. These business leaders will be available to chat with community members about green business and what it's like to be Black in these industries. These Green entrepreneurs will also disclose impending job opportunities for which community members can interview on-site.
A music festival follows the Green Jobs Expo: This revolves around the stage, where guests will be entertained by spoken word performers, a band, and other media attractions.
Black Panther Movie in the Garden: Black Panther is the perfect illustration of Solar Punk since it exhibits the cultural use of technology. Black Panther also exemplifies the long-term usage of technology in the fusion and collaboration of our technological environment and culture. This film is nostalgic in the BIPOC community because it shows Black representation in Hollywood.

The Green Jobs Expo will be facilitated by multiple BIPOC led green businesses that will speak for 5 minutes each. During their speeches, each of the businesses will go over who they are, what their Green Business does, and some of the challenges they face as BIPOC led businesses in a traditionally white-dominated space. These businesses will also talk about the opportunities their businesses seek to explore and scale on, as well as opportunities for future hires. As the event will be marketed to working-age youth who are interested in Green Jobs and Industries, we will be hosting a Mini Job Fair right after the Green Jobs Expo where the youth can sign up for interviews with your Organization. Burien has a higher rate of unemployment, as compared to the national average. The purpose of this Job Fair event is to create a conducive environment, where multiple recruiters, hiring managers, and employers, can meet with potential employees, in one convenient neutral venue. The Job Fair will enable Green Companies to save time and effort on recruiting, by participating in this event. This will be achieved by giving Job Seekers the opportunity to attend interviews with well-known companies at a Job Fair. Click here if your looking to participate in the Mini Job Fair.

Solar Punk Film Showcase
Black Panther’s vision of Wakanda rejects the oft-repeated story that we humans and our environment are natural enemies. Instead, it tells a story in which humans have become technologically sophisticated while maintaining a flourishing relationship with their surrounding environment.
In other words, Black Panther is Solar Punk.
