"Education must not simply teach work—it must teach Life."
— W.E.B. DuBois
Did you know that the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) offers financial aid to HBCU bound students? The Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant (Cal-HBCU) Program awards up to $5,000 to participating students who transfer from California Community Colleges to eligible, partnered Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically Black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.”
HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. These institutions offer a unique, supportive environment that celebrates Black heritage and identity while training young people who go on to serve domestically and internationally as entrepreneurs, public servants, and change agents in both the public and private sectors.
There are 107 colleges in the United States that are identified by the US Department of Education as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
These schools were founded over 150 years ago to offer higher education to Black students
They offer academic support to students, fostering community and continuing tradition and culture
HBCUs offer both need and merit-based financial aid
HBCUs are likely to work with students on admission requirements
Many HBCUs use the common app to process admissions applications. Go to the Private College section for more information.
