Brad Hostetler

Assistant Professor of Art History at Kenyon College

I am an art historian, focusing on the visual and material culture of Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire. My research examines the multifaceted relationships between art and texts, including ekphraseis, epigrams, and epigraphy. My current book project, Epigram, Fragment, and Engagement: Reliquaries in Medieval Byzantium, analyzes reliquaries through the lens of ekphrastic epigrams, and considers the ways in which these texts shaped Byzantine thought on, and guided practice with, sacred matter. I teach courses at Kenyon on the art and architecture of the ancient and medieval Mediterranean.
