Science, Grade 8 is interdisciplinary in nature and has a focus on earth and physical science with the integration of chemistry, physics, and life science. Students in 8th grade science study a variety of topics that include: scientific investigations and reasoning; matter and energy; force, motion, and energy; natural events, cycles; and environmental interactions.
Honors Science, Grade 8 covers the Science, Grade 8 curriculum while encouraging advanced skills, in depth discussion, more comprehensive lab work and increased independent study. Special projects are assigned during the year, which require individual research on the internet or at a local library. Classroom presentations are expected. Concurrent enrollment in Honors Algebra I is recommended.

Prerequisite/ Co-requisite: Must have taken or take Algebra I concurrently to take Biology in 8th grade.
Biology Honors is a comprehensive study of biology, ecology, evolution, biochemical pathways, organic and biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology (which includes invertebrates), taxonomy, embryogenesis, homeostasis and human body systems (immune, lymphatic, digestive, and circulatory system). Students will be expected to show commitment to Honors curriculum and be motivated to utilize higher level thinking skills. The course will also include special projects and a more in-depth study of biological concepts. Honors students should expect to continue in the AP program with a goal of taking the AP test.
Students study the history of the United States from the early colonial period through Reconstruction. Historical content focuses on the political, geographic, economic, religious, and social events and issues related to the colonial and revolutionary eras, the creation and ratification of the U.S. Constitution, challenges of the early republic, the Age of Jackson, westward expansion, sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Students will examine the American beliefs and principles, including limited government, checks and balances, federalism, separation of powers, and individual rights, reflected in the U.S. Constitution and other historical documents. A collection of primary and secondary sources will be used to understand the complex history of the United States.
Includes the basic understanding of Social Studies, Grade 8 curriculum with added rigor, depth, global connections, and expectations of sophistication in student work. Please note that there is strong expectation that all of the students in an Honors social studies program are preparing for Advanced Placement in one or more of the following: World History, U.S. History, Government, Economics, Human Geography, and European History.
