Language Arts, Grade 8 instruction emphasizes self-selected reading in a variety of genres, creating compositions for a wide variety of audiences, and integrating inquiry and cultural relevance. Driven by response to author’s craft, foundational language skills are reinforced within the context of reading and writing. Students will engage in analysis of text structure throughout the year, including the effectiveness of multiple structures for various audiences and purposes
High School Credit: 1 English I Honors, Grade 8 instruction emphasizes independence in deep text analysis, authentic inquiry on a variety of topics, and honing author’s craft by writing for various audiences and purposes. Students read sophisticated literary and informational texts with special emphasis on analysis of text elements and the interactions among those elements. Self-selected independent reading is critical, as well as collective study of mentor texts across genre and book clubs in culturally relevant texts. This challenging class prepares students for entering English II Honors in 9th grade by focusing on skills required for success in Dual Credit and on the Advanced Placement Exam. Students will receive high school credit with Honors weight.
