Books have been banned and burned throughout history starting in 259 BCE when the Chinese Emperor burned every book in China and had 460 Confucius scholars killed as well to keep their ideas from spreading. The Odyssey was banned in Ancient Rome, Shakespeare was banned, Charles Darwin, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Jack London, Alice in Wonderland, and even Mickey Mouse Comics were banned. Early challenges to books were that they went against the religion at the time, were "blasphemous", obscene, explicit, communist, contained profanity, or too much sexual content.
Surprisingly, book banning (and even burning) has not ended. Too many titles to list have been banned in modern times as well. New challenges to books include LGBTQIA content, conflicts with religions, sexual content, content that concerns social problems such as alcoholism, drug use, suicide, and offensive language.

The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
