  • What is the Marketplace? Kawartha Local Marketplace is an incorporated not-for-profit social enterprise designed to make it easier for local producers to sell their goods to the retail buying public. The cost, terms and conditions of membership are intended to provide startup and maturing goods and services companies with low risk and affordable access to the market.
  • How does Marketplace membership work? Kawartha Local Marketplace offers dedicated retail space of varying sizes for up to 20 members. Members are responsible for pricing product, branding and stocking their space. Kawartha Local Marketplace looks after overhead, staffing, sales and systems. Members keep 95% of the sales revenue generated by goods in their dedicated space. In general the Marketplace offers a full time bricks and mortar retail environment to showcase your work on an ongoing basis. In addition, staff will facilitate customer contact and requests for custom work at no additional cost to the member. No exclusivity arrangements are required, members are free to sell their products on a wholesale basis or in any other direct-to-consumer forum available.
  • How much does it cost and what are the terms? Monthly membership fees are $15, $75, $100 and $200 (plus HST) depending on the size of the dedicated space. Members pay fees on a month to month basis, no long term commitment is required; the minimum term is one month. The Marketplace acts as a goods and services incubator and so the maximum membership term available is 18 months.
  • What are the criteria to become a member? Kawartha Local Marketplace seeks to showcase an eclectic range of locally made products. This includes artisan and handcrafted works but also culinary, health and beauty, houseware and home decor, outdoor and garden, and everyday consumer products. Startups of all kinds are encouraged to apply (including part time or side-line businesses), but members must be a registered business (sole proprietor etc) with the intent of growing or developing their business over time. Members must be local to Peterborough and the Kawarthas region and the majority of product creation activities or manufacturing must be similarly local. Businesses based on reselling vintage items, imported products or items manufactured outside of the region are not available for membership.
