In show jumping, the goal is to jump a course of jumps as quickly as possible, with as few penalties as possible. The rider with the least penaltiess and the fastest time, wins the competition.
If the horse refuses a jump, the player gets 4 penalties and attempts the jump again. If the horse knocks down a pole, the player gets 4 penalties. No penalties are given if the horse touches a pole but it doesn't fall to the ground. Additionally, the player gets 1 penalty for each second started that exceeds the time limit.
Each course has a time limit. If the player exceeds it, they get more penalties.
Additionally, each course has 2 extra target times in increasing difficulty. Clearing these target times rewards the player & horse with a ribbon, with a total of 3 ribbons per course. The ribbons have no effect in whether the horse levels up, or unlocking courses. The ribbons are individual to each horse, and appears in that horse's achievement history.
A knockdown is when the horse hits a pole so that it falls to the ground. It counts as 4 penalties.
The horse might refuse for various reasons, as explained in Jumping Mechanics. Each refusal counts as 4 penalties.
If the player takes too long to finish the course, they will be disqualified.
