The Story
the next node
The project site sits on the side of a small junction
not far from current expansions. By converting it
into a planned node we can use it as an antidote for
the unplanned expansion process. It will reinstate
the lost identity of the town and reduce load in the
existing nodes. Through controlled and planned
development we can create a strong architectural
character, and deliver a new experience to the
public. A gate way to the town.
Site got two access roads connected through
separate windows. The first window connected
with the main access road -the State highway 1 -
kept pedestrianized while second window used as a
service entry. Parking and service related facilities
zoned in close proximity with the service entry
while all other facilities oriented towards the main
pedestrian entry.
Spatial definitions changes with movement with
every level bear unique identity and a point of
attraction. These points lie in the periphery of an
imaginary funnel which invites, guides and surprise
the visitor. It communicates with mind and propels
us to the top. Spaces became less and less enclosed
as we gain elevation creating a sense openness and
stillness in the mind. The curiosity we felt at the
bottom slowly diminishes as spaces become clearer
and less enclosed. Mind attains a sense of
calmness. As we move up the inward looking spaces
slowly transforms until it opens up completely
The major programs arranged around two
courtyards. The heart of the structure from which
energy is pumped, collected and distributed. A light
well which connects the inner space to outer and an
interactive platform with full of life. Through adopting
traditional courtyard concept direct heat impact
is reduced while maintaining a steady inflow of light
throughout the day. Longer side of courtyard is
oriented towards East-West direction, this keep
most areas away from direct sunlight. Eastern side
reserved for circulation. This also increases the
efficiency of HVAC systems. Changing people and
shadows keeps courtyards dynamic and live
throughout.
Visual connectivity and visual communication have
a great influence in the working of any design. Here
through carefully laid out visual connections
interior spaces fused into one grand space, exists in
multiple levels. Through two huge courtyards and
big window in the front façade interior connects
with exterior. Visual connectivity between inner and
outer spaces increases from bottom to top.
Through roof top restaurants and party spaces it
visually interacts with the public. The big window
connects two atmospheres and sets platform for
long and interesting conversations. From outside its
objective is to create a sense of curiosity. A celluloid
where a new lifestyle is showcased.
Basic form divided into three blocks with different
characters. Entry block hosts the main entry. Two
vertical walls each having a height of 4.5m creates
the main enclosure. It isolates and directs the visitor
to the entry. A third wall treated with glossy finish in
contrast with the rough texture of other two
extends from entry gives a introduction of inner
space. The three dimensions converge into one
point - the entry, a humane enclosure, builds up
pressure and opens into a huge volume creating a
sense of relaxation and joy.
The central block with a big puncture in the center
creates a sense of curiosity in the passer by. A sense
of here and there. The central block is visible from
half a kilometer away while approaching from
Thiruvananthapuram. It establishes a strong visual
connection with public even from a distance and
marks its presence in the hearts.
The south block hosts parking, services, hyper
market, multiplex, food court and a viewing deck.
With its outer skin reserved for advertisements, an
integral part of any shopping facility.
