After 20 years of dedicated service within the Wappingers Central School District, helping students at both John Jay and Ketcham; Mrs. LoCicero is set to retire, leaving behind two decades of compassion, commitment, and a lasting impact on countless students.
Originally from Westchester, Mrs. LoCicero’s journey into social work was not straightforward. She initially wanted to become a teacher but found her calling in human services while attending Mercy College and Fordham University for her master’s degree. This decision led her to a career where she could directly affect students’ lives. “I really liked working with kids, making their lives better,” she reflects. Mrs. LoCicero’s role at John Jay and Ketcham was multifaceted. She supported special education students and provided necessary crisis management for all students. “To talk it out with each other, respect each other’s different views,” Mrs. LoCicero emphasizes. “You don’t have to be friends, just respectful—everyone has different needs.”
One of her favorite parts of the job was learning from her students. “They give me something too—a new perspective,” she shares. This approach helps her reach more students, who appreciate her genuine interest and respect. However, the job came with challenges. Watching students struggle was particularly tough. “It’s horrible to watch some kids struggling so much,” she admits. These experiences only strengthened her resolve and dedication. For those considering a career in social work, Mrs. LoCicero advises: “Know that it’s something you really want to do. You have to put your all into it—keep going.” Her words reflect the difficulty of her profession, social work.
In retirement, Mrs. LoCicero plans to focus on her private practice, continuing to make a difference in individuals’ well-being, at an office locally. Also, as an avid traveler, Mrs. LoCicero will split her leisure time traveling and spending time with her newborn grandson. Her departure is significant for the John Jay and Ketcham communities, but her impact will continue to also be significant. “Mrs. LoCicero’s retirement is a bittersweet moment for all of us,” says Principal Kedzielawa. “We are happy for her as she embarks on this new chapter, but we will miss her dearly. Her contributions are immeasurable.” As we celebrate Mrs. LoCicero’s retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude for her years of service and wish her all the best. John Jay Senior High School will always be enriched by her presence and contributions. Thank you, Mrs. LoCicero, for everything.
