Truth be told, some teachers’ first career plans weren’t teaching. Some thought of pursuing a hobby as a job, while others found it a last resort.
For Amber Krisch, she states, “Becoming a teacher was never actually my plan. I just sort of found myself here after doing a lot of soul searching, working various jobs, and figuring out how I wanted to contribute to the world.” Her students take notice of her free-spirited nature, which can be tied back to her previous ideals.
“If I wasn’t here, I would be somewhere in the sky, flying,” Ms. Krisch says. “I always loved airplanes from a young age, and found myself exhilarated by the thought of flying one myself.” She adds, “In another universe, under different circumstances, I would probably be an airline pilot or charter pilot–or even better, a bush pilot out in Alaska or some other remote place.”
What might have hindered her from these big dreams, you might ask? “I’m not adventurous enough to commit to flying–I’m too much of a homebody.” But that wasn’t enough to stop her from pursuing it as a hobby and side interest, adding to her response with, “However, I do get a taste of that life as a private pilot flying small Cessnas, which will have to suffice… for now.”
Beyond her yearning for the sky, she yearned to help people, explaining, “I would maybe continue my path to medicine, which was my original plan way before teaching.” Even as she considered crossing down that path, she puts forth a counterpoint, saying that “working in healthcare was never really [her] thing,” adding that it “still isn’t” in her ideal path.
Despite all her hopes and dreams, she claims that she’s content with what her final decision led her to, finishing with, “I like where I am, and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!”
Maybe teaching isn’t the end of her endeavors, but she’s satisfied now. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll look up, and instead of her in the classroom, you’ll spot her up in the sky having the time of her life.
