The stage came to life as the dedicated cast and crew transported the audience into a world of music, dance, and heartfelt emotion. Proscenium once again demonstrated their strong reputation in delivering a remarkable theatrical experience, leaving their audience crying, laughing, and excited for future productions.

Hairspray is a lively musical set in 1960s Baltimore, that tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a quirky and determined teenage girl who dreams of dancing on a local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Despite facing discrimination and ridicule because of her weight, Tracy's infectious optimism and enthusiasm earn her a spot on the show, where she becomes an overnight sensation. Along the way, Tracy uses her newfound fame to advocate for racial integration on the show, leading to tensions with the show's producers and the broader community. Through catchy songs and energetic dance numbers, Hairspray Tackles themes of acceptance, equality, and the power of self-confidence.

The cast of Hairspray consisted of a very talented group of individuals who effortlessly brought this story to life. Proscenium’s very best, across all grades and experience levels took the stage and each delivered what can only be described as absolutely show stopping performances. From the infectious energy of the ensemble numbers to the heartfelt solos that tugged at the heartstrings, every moment was infused with passion and skill. It was evident that the cast had poured their hearts and souls into their roles, creating a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

The president of Proscenium, Carly Kershenbaum, stunned audiences in the lead role of Tracey Turnblad. She closed out her final show with Proscenium with a bang, bringing forth a bubbly and energetic performance that perfectly encapsulated the main character’s can-do spirit. To put it plainly her portrayal was a masterclass, captivating the audience from the moment she stepped onto the stage until the final curtain fell. Her impeccable comedic timing and infectious energy brought the character of Tracey to life in a way that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Another standout performance came from Layla McNeil as Motormouth Maybelle, a vivacious and outspoken mother who leads alongside Tracy in fighting for integration on their TV screens. This role marked Layla's debut singing solo on stage, a significant departure from her past roles like Kristine in A Chorus Line, a character known for her fear of singing solo. Despite this, Layla's rendition of "I Know Where I’ve Been" was nothing short of powerful, leaving the audience with chills. She was an absolute vocal powerhouse who will no doubt leave a great mark on Proscenium.

The unsung heroes of this production were the ones that lie behind the scenes. As always Proscenium’s stage crew created stunning set pieces that immersed  the audience into the technicolor world of 1960s Baltimore. Their expert craftsmanship not only captured the essence of the era but also added an element of whimsy and charm to the production. Their tireless efforts truly elevated the performance, ensuring that every moment on stage was nothing short of magical.

This show wouldn't have been complete without the talented group of musicians in the pit orchestra. Under the guidance of Mr. Banda, they delivered flawless performances, setting the perfect tone for each musical number. Their dedication and talent shone through, enriching the overall experience for those in the show and those watching along.
