Physical Features

Raccoons have dark fur around their eyes. They have a big, bushy tail with different sized black colored rings. Their fur is an iron-gray to a black as dark as coal. Their eyes are very large and they have whiskers and soft fur.

Habitat

Raccoons mostly live in the U.S. as well as Canada. They choose to live in forested, grassy, and rocky areas. A baby raccoon will have their mother make a den for them. Their den is usually in a small cave or hole.

Behavior

Scientists believe that raccoons are smarter than house cats. Sometimes raccoons will look for food in gardens that are locked as well as hold fish by the hand to eat. Raccoons are known to be mischievous and sneaky. They make clever plans to catch food.

Life Cycle

Raccoons reproduce once a year. Two to seven kits are born at a time. Wild raccoons live up to 16 years. Raccoons that are being held captive live up to 21 years.
