Foxes

Introduction

Have you ever seen a fox before? Foxes are beautiful mammals that look like a dog with a bushy tail.

Physical Features

Foxes are usually 32 to 57 inches long including the tail. They weigh 6 to 17 pounds. They can be many different colors. Some of the colors are red, silver, and black.

Habitat

Foxes often live in dens. The den is usually a burrow dug by another animal that left the burrow. Some females need to find their dens when they are about to birth a pup.

Behavior

When the female fox has a baby she needs to stay with them, so the father goes out to hunt for the family. Foxes eat Insects, reptiles, frogs, and birds.

Life Cycle

The female fox can only birth 3 to 5 cubs. When the foxes are babies they cannot see or hear. When they are a month old they can see and hear. Foxes sadly live only 2 to 5 years.

Some people say "Clever as a fox." They say that because foxes are very cunning and clever.

Did you know foxes have many enemies? Some of their enemies are their predators but it is mostly people.
