Importance of FACS Education

Family and Consumer Sciences Education teaches students practical skills that can be utilized throughout their lifetime. With FACS courses, students can be better prepared to tackle college, the workforce, and adult life.

FCCLA is a co-curricular organization offering many competitive events and national programs that coincide with FACS courses offered nationwide.

Real World Skills Through FCS Education

Individuals require many skills to be college and career ready, including academic knowledge, technical expertise, and a set of general, cross-cutting abilities called “employability skills.”

FACS Courses at Redfield High School

7th Grade Careers

7th Grade Careers introduces students to the 16 career clusters, while offering insight from local professionals in each career cluster.

Employability

Employability is a course taken by 11th grade students to better prepare them for the work force. Students recognize their personal skills and develop career plans. Throughout the course, students will job shadow two occupations, complete mock interviews, develop resumes, and write cover letters. Students in the class will also take the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) exam and explore colleges that offer their program of interest.

Fundamental Foods

Students will acquire know-how in food nutrition and food preparation. The course teaches basic food preparation techniques with a variety of food labs. A final project of a guest meal brings together all concepts learned.

Food Technology

Students will develop a new, healthy food product—working collaboratively to prepare package and market their nutritious new product. At the beginning of the semester students review food preparation and food safety concepts. Basic nutrition concepts will be applied to food preparation. At this time, you will have the opportunity to create and develop a new food product which you will run test markets on, and learn how to market your product in various ways.

Human Development I

A course that gives students an understanding of children from prenatal through toddlers. Characteristics of children and how to care for them are discussed. Students will work with Baby Think It Over, and with children on a weekly basis at a local daycare and preschool.

Human Development II

A course that concentrates on children ages two through school age. Students will learn characteristics of preschool and school age children and how to care for them. Students will participate in a weekly mentorship program where they will work with children in daycare facilities, preschool or elementary classrooms. All students will become certified in CPR.

Nutrition & Wellness

Students will learn ways to cook food that is good for their body type and activity level. Topics covered are: nutrition, food trends, food fads, diets, eating disorders, special diets, and how to eat healthy. All topics will be covered by doing food labs.

Interior Design

This course is for any student interested in types of housing, home furnishings, interior design, and selection of homes. Students will develop a computer based floor plan. This floor plan will then be completed with details of decorations and furnishings. An actual decorating project will be completed by the class in the school.

Teen Life

This course helps students understand and cope with personal, family and social challenges. Emphasis is placed on communication, decision making skills and building stable relationships with family and peers. The course enables students to implement positive coping mechanisms and promotes understanding of self. It addresses issues that impact teenagers: self concept, family and peer relationships, substance abuse, personal loss, dating, teenage pregnancy, and child abuse.

Life & Community Projects

This course allows students to plan a community events or project. The project must go beyond what one already knows or has experienced. This is a three part process consisting of a research paper, project/product that is extension of the research and an oral presentation.

Leadership & Service Learning

This course allows students to plan community service projects by identifying specific problems. Service learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility and strengthen community. Students will develop leadership skills, promote volunteerism, and strengthen school and community awareness.

Career Internship

This is a class designed to prepare students to enter the work field after graduation of high school, tech school or college. Students will have the opportunity to experience the real world of work by participating in 90 hours of on the job experience. Students must apply and be accepted with a confirmed work site prior to enrolling in this course.

Fashion Design

This course students will acquire skills in fashion design and construction of items.

Educators Rising/SD Educators for Tomorrow

Designed to help students learn about the role of a teacher and careers in the education & training career cluster. The course Teach & Train is intended to give knowledge, skills, and experiences to high school students who are considering a profession in education (early childhood, elementary, or middle/high school) or training (business or industry).
