There are so many exciting things related to structured literacy happening across our beautiful state of Hawaiʻi!
Hilo-Waiākea Complex Area
Hilo-Waiākea Complex continues to create a culture of literacy by providing students opportunities to grow across all subject areas in the four domains: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Recently, we celebrated National Poetry Month by participating in a variety of activities focused around this 4000-year-old genre, which included reading famous and not-so-famous poetry, writing our own poems using learned vocabulary and literary devices, sharing them on Poetry in a Pocket Day, and displaying our illustrated poems at the Hilo Public Library where the public was able to engage by giving authentic comments and feedback.

Nanakuli-Waianae Complex Area
In Nanakuli-Waianae schools, there is a strong focus on literacy education, with a range of programs and initiatives designed to support students' reading and writing skills. One important aspect of this effort is the complex library of reading intervention programs, which provides teachers with a range of resources and tools to support struggling readers. These programs are designed to target specific areas of need, such as phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. To ensure that teachers are equipped to use these programs effectively, Nanakuli-Waianae schools also offer professional development opportunities focused on literacy foundations. These workshops and training sessions provide teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to implement evidence-based reading strategies. To track student progress and identify areas of need, schools in the area also utilize the Galileo and mClass data systems. These systems provide teachers with real-time data on student performance, allowing them to identify areas of strength and weakness, adjust instruction accordingly, and provide targeted interventions where necessary.
