Terms to Know:

Simple Subject:

• Is the main noun or pronoun that names the subject of the sentence.

Complete Subject:

• Includes all of the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about.

Simple Predicate:

• Is the verb that tells exactly what the subject does or is.

Complete Predicate:

• Is the verb and all of the words that tell what the subject does or is.

Compound Subject:

• Is two or more subjects that share the same verb. The subjects are usually joined by a conjunction such as and or or.

Compound Predicate:

-Contains two or more predicates that have the same subject.

Coordinating Conjunction:

-A conjunction placed between words, phrases, clauses, or sentences of equal rank.

Examples: (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S): For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Correlative Conjunctions:

• To connect two subjects, the second subject should agree with the following verb. In other words, make sure the verb agrees with whichever subject comes last.

• Examples: "both/and," "either/or," "neither/nor," "not/but" and "not only/but also."

Commas:

• To separate three or more words or phrases in a series.

Appositive:

• is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it.

• Example: The insect, a cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table.
